The research in brief

Home Assistant is the consensus leader for whole-home automation hub selection in this 7-platform AI study, named by all seven platforms with an average listed position of 1.0 and a best position of 1. Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Hubitat Elevation are the strongest alternatives for distinct buyer needs: Aeotec for mixed Z-Wave/Zigbee/Matter homes that want a polished consumer app, and Hubitat for local-first execution with built-in radios and no dongles. Aqara, Homey, Apple Home, Amazon Echo Hub, and Google Home round out the qualifying set. Eight entities qualified from twelve unique names by being named by at least two platforms. The principal limitation is that this index reflects one standardized prompt sent once to each included platform; AI answers vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and retrieved sources, and platform recommendations are market intelligence rather than independent customer reviews or proof of quality.

1. Home Assistant

Questions explored

  • Is Home Assistant worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if they need the widest device compatibility and local processing?
  • What does Home Assistant Green cost, and which radio dongles must be purchased separately?

Home Assistant is the consensus leader in this study and the only entity named by all seven platforms. It is an open-source platform that runs on the buyer's own hardware, with an official plug-and-play appliance in Home Assistant Green and a more expandable Yellow variant. Home Assistant is best understood as an automation core rather than a finished consumer appliance.

Why it ranked here. Home Assistant received a first-place listing from every platform that named it, producing an average listed position of 1.0 and a best position of 1. No other entity in this study achieved that consistency. The ranking reflects breadth of device support, local-first architecture, and ecosystem openness rather than any single hardware specification.

Best suited for. Multi-brand lighting, thermostat, sensor, and appliance ecosystems; local-first automations that should continue operating when the internet is unavailable; and buyers willing to select compatible devices, configure integrations, and maintain backups and updates.

Main strengths for the use case. Home Assistant publishes integrations for more than 1,000 device and brand domains spanning Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, and cloud APIs [158]. The platform is Apache-2.0 open source and self-hosted, so automations, data, and device pairings remain usable if the vendor disappears, and no cloud account is required for core operation [153]. Core automation runs locally on the hub, and Nabu Casa Cloud is an optional paid add-on used mainly for remote access, Google/Alexa bridging, and cloud text-to-speech rather than core control [161]. Home Assistant Green ships pre-flashed with Home Assistant OS and is ready after connecting power and Ethernet, with no Linux knowledge required [222]. The Green datasheet lists a Rockchip RK3566 quad-core processor, 4 GB LPDDR4X memory, and 32 GB eMMC storage [35].

Main limitations. Home Assistant Green has no onboard Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth radios; direct Zigbee or Thread control requires a Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 or similar adapter, and Z-Wave generally requires a separate USB stick [241]. Thread border router integration with Matter has been described as work in progress, and enabling Thread involves manual steps [160]. Support is documentation- and community-first rather than a guaranteed professional installation or telephone-support model [156]. Home Assistant Yellow production ended in October 2025, leaving Green as the primary recommended hardware [213].

2. Aeotec Smart Home Hub

Questions explored

  • Is the Aeotec Smart Home Hub worth it for a home that mixes Z-Wave locks with Zigbee sensors?
  • Which whole-home automation hub should a buyer choose if they want Z-Wave support and a polished consumer app?
  • What should a buyer check before choosing an Aeotec Smart Home Hub instead of the newer Smart Home Hub 2?

Aeotec Smart Home Hub is the retail continuation of the Samsung SmartThings Hub hardware line, operated through the SmartThings app and cloud platform. Aeotec Smart Home Hub is the second-ranked entity here, named by all seven platforms with an average listed position of 3.71 and a best position of 3.

Why it ranked here. Every platform named it, and it was listed third by three platforms. Its position reflects broad multi-protocol coverage at a mid-range price with a mature consumer app, offset by partial rather than complete local operation.

Best suited for. Homes combining Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi devices; lighting, thermostat, sensor, and lock automations across brands; and buyers who prefer the SmartThings consumer app over a fully self-hosted platform.

Main strengths for the use case. The original hub supports Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi, and Aeotec states compatibility with thousands of devices from hundreds of brands [2]. It supports up to 100 Z-Wave devices with S2 security and up to 100 Zigbee devices, making it materially more suitable for Z-Wave-based whole-home systems than newer SmartThings hardware that may omit Z-Wave [7]. SmartThings Edge drivers execute some automations locally on the hub, reducing latency for supported devices [5]. The SmartThings app provides a polished multiplatform interface with scenes, routines, and room organization [169]. Setup guidance recommends Ethernet during initial setup and allows switching to Wi-Fi afterward [8].

Main limitations. The platform is only partially local. Aeotec states that internet access is generally required for app access, cloud services, updates, and remote control, and independent evidence describes the platform as still cloud-dependent for some integrations and functions [186]. One platform reported that only about 40% of automations can run locally and that the app requires internet to function [184]. There is no native Apple HomeKit support [234]. Camera integration is weak relative to lighting and sensors [234]. Model confusion is material: the newer Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 lists Zigbee, Matter, Thread, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi but does not list Z-Wave, so buyers relying on Z-Wave locks or switches must confirm they are purchasing the older Z-Wave-equipped model [311].

3. Hubitat Elevation

Questions explored

  • Is Hubitat Elevation worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if they need built-in Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Matter radios without USB dongles?
  • What does Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro cost, and which optional subscriptions apply?

Hubitat Elevation is a local-first hub line, with the C-8 Pro as the current flagship. Hubitat Elevation ranked third here, named by six platforms with an average listed position of 2.17 and a best position of 2.

Why it ranked here. It was listed second by four platforms, the strongest average position of any entity outside the top spot. Its ranking reflects local execution and built-in radios rather than ecosystem size.

Best suited for. Local-first whole-home automation; mixed Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Bluetooth, LAN, and cloud-connected ecosystems; and tech-savvy homeowners comfortable with rule configuration and community-supported integrations.

Main strengths for the use case. The C-8 Pro supports Zigbee 3.0, Z-Wave 800, Matter 1.5, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi with no additional USB dongles required for common protocols [330]. Automations run locally inside the home and continue during internet disruptions, with one test reporting execution under 100 milliseconds versus 2–3 seconds for cloud-based alternatives [317]. The platform supports 1,000+ compatible devices across 100+ brands, including Philips Hue, IKEA, Aqara, Lutron, Leviton, Schlage, Kwikset, Ecobee, Sonos, Ring, and Nest [207]. Rule Machine provides a full conditional logic system with triggers, conditions, and branching action sequences. The C-8 Pro adds a 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 processor and 2 GB RAM over the prior generation [279]. External antennas improve Z-Wave coverage for larger homes [226].

Main limitations. The web interface and dashboards are widely described as functional but dated, with a steeper learning curve than mainstream cloud hubs [328]. Setup took upwards of 45 minutes for the hub and four devices in one review [338]. There is no native HomeKit support without Maker API workarounds [330]. Nest thermostat integration is blocked by Google and Ring devices require complex workarounds [317]. Many newer Wi-Fi devices lack native support and require custom drivers [59]. There is no battery backup, and the hub requires power to function locally [207]. Hubitat claims Matter 1.5 support but carries no equivalent CSA-listed certification entry [329]. The standard C-8 Pro and the Thread Special Edition are mutually exclusive on radios [58].

4. Aqara

Questions explored

  • Is Aqara worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose for an Aqara-heavy home that also needs Matter bridging into Apple Home?
  • What does the Aqara Hub M3 cost, and does it support Z-Wave devices?

Aqara is a hardware ecosystem built around the Hub M3, a multi-protocol hub that acts as a Zigbee coordinator, Thread border router, and Matter controller and bridge. Aqara ranked fourth, named by six platforms with an average listed position of 4.83 and a best position of 2.

Why it ranked here. It received one second-place listing and one third-place listing, but also an eighth-place listing, producing the widest spread of any top-five entity. Its ranking reflects strong hardware capability constrained by ecosystem lock-in.

Best suited for. Aqara-heavy homes using motion, contact, temperature, leak, lighting, shade, or lock devices; mixed Matter, Thread, and Zigbee installations; and buyers prioritizing local automation, Ethernet or PoE, and an internet-outage-resilient hub.

Main strengths for the use case. The M3 combines Aqara Zigbee, Thread, Matter controller, and Matter bridge functions and claims support for up to 127 Thread/Zigbee devices [119]. It supports Ethernet through PoE as well as dual-band Wi-Fi and USB-C power-bank use, which can improve placement and resilience [119]. Aqara states that the M3 prioritizes local control with encrypted local storage, and an independent 2026 test reported that local rules, Matter responses, and Zigbee bridging continued during a 48-hour WAN disconnect [256]. The built-in 360-degree IR blaster can control IR appliances and expose one IR-controlled air conditioner as a thermostat in specified Matter setups [277]. Two M3 hubs can form a cluster where automations mirror to a secondary hub for takeover if the primary fails [141]. Aqara is described as exceptionally strong in HomeKit support, with HomeKit Secure Video and end-to-end encrypted local video analysis [119].

Main limitations. There is no Z-Wave radio, which one review specifically identifies as a limitation [312]. Over the Zigbee protocol the hub pairs only with Aqara-branded devices; third-party devices must be integrated via Matter or IP [239]. The Aqara Home app is phone-only and has been described by independent testers as the weakest part of the ownership experience, with unreliable device-name synchronization between Matter fabrics [256]. Matter bridging can omit vendor-specific functions for complex devices such as some thermostats and multifunction sensors [228]. Aqara notes that some device types may not be supported at launch and that limitations may apply when connecting Aqara Thread border routers to existing Thread networks [319].

5. Homey

Questions explored

  • Is Homey Pro worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if they want the broadest built-in radio set without USB dongles?
  • What does Homey Pro (2026) cost, and is 433 MHz supported in the United States?

Homey is a consumer-oriented hub line built around Homey Pro (2026), with Homey Pro mini as a lower-cost option and Homey Bridge as a coverage extender rather than a standalone local hub. Homey ranked fifth, named by five platforms with an average listed position of 4.0 and a best position of 2.

Why it ranked here. It received one second-place and one third-place listing but also a seventh-place listing. Its ranking reflects unmatched built-in radio breadth offset by premium pricing and a smaller integration library than open-source alternatives.

Homey states it connects with more than 70,000 devices from over 2,000 brands [43]. The platform provides standard Flow, Advanced Flow, energy monitoring, insights, dashboards, moods, and HomeyScript, with Advanced Flow included at no additional charge [41]. Homey Pro is marketed as local-first with local processing and no required subscription for core operation [47]. The 2026 model doubles RAM to 4 GB and is designed for extensive setups with many apps and integrations [52]. Homey Pro is certified as a Matter 1.5 controller by the Connectivity Standards Alliance [55]. Homey states that Homey Pro will receive software updates until at least June 2031 [47].

Main limitations. The U.S. version disables 433 MHz transmission because of regional regulatory differences, limiting some legacy sensors and remote-control devices [47]. Automatic cloud backups cost extra at $10 per year [47]. A wired Ethernet connection requires a separately purchased adapter [47]. Homey's authentication method has been reported as flawed, with users potentially locked out of management if the internet fails at the wrong moment, though the hub continues running automations [181]. Ecosystem openness depends on Homey's app review process rather than open-source contribution [53].

6. Apple Home

Questions explored

  • Is Apple Home worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if their household is entirely on iPhone and they want Thread and Matter support?
  • What does an Apple Home hub cost, and which Apple devices work as a home hub in 2026?

Apple Home is Apple's smart home platform, requiring a home hub such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K to enable automations, remote access, and Thread border routing. Apple Home ranked sixth, named by five platforms with an average listed position of 5.6 and a best position of 4.

Why it ranked here. It was listed fourth by one platform and fifth by two others, but also eighth by one platform. Its ranking reflects strong privacy and local processing constrained by narrower device breadth and iOS-only administration.

Best suited for. Households already invested in iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod, or Apple TV; whole-home lighting, climate, sensor, lock, and scene automation using HomeKit- or Matter-compatible products; and buyers prioritizing a cohesive app experience, Siri control, local-capable operation, and Apple privacy positioning.

Apple Home supports HomeKit accessories and Matter accessories across lights, switches, outlets, thermostats, sensors, locks, bridges, and robot vacuums [21]. Apple HomeKit enforces local control: Matter devices work without internet and without manufacturer servers, and automations run locally from the home hub [301]. HomeKit Secure Video uses on-device intelligence of Apple TV 4K to analyze video locally for people, animals, cars, and package deliveries [145]. Two HomePod minis deployed as a stereo pair provide redundant hub coverage with automatic failover [332]. Matter multi-admin support allows the same device to be managed by Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings simultaneously [178]. Setup for HomePod mini runs approximately eight minutes from unboxing to Apple Home enrollment [332].

Main limitations. HomeKit does not control major appliances such as refrigerators and washers, a category Samsung SmartThings addresses [220]. Setup and remote management require an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16 or later; Android users cannot set up or manage HomeKit homes directly [244]. HomePod mini's Thread support is limited to HomeKit devices and cannot be used cross-platform [299]. Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) supports Thread but only for HomeKit or Matter-enabled Thread accessories, not cross-platform Thread devices [30]. HomeKit Secure Video requires an iCloud+ subscription [92].

7. Amazon Echo Hub

Questions explored

  • Is the Amazon Echo Hub worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if they want a wall-mounted touchscreen dashboard for Alexa devices?
  • What does the Amazon Echo Hub cost, and does it support Z-Wave devices?

Amazon Echo Hub is an 8-inch Alexa-enabled smart home control panel with a built-in hub supporting Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Sidewalk. Amazon Echo Hub ranked seventh, named by four platforms with an average listed position of 6.75 and a best position of 4.

Why it ranked here. It received one fourth-place and one fifth-place listing but also an eighth-place and a tenth-place listing. Its ranking reflects a purpose-built dashboard and broad protocol coverage offset by cloud-dependent automation and no Z-Wave radio.

Best suited for. Alexa-first households integrating compatible lighting, thermostats, sensors, locks, cameras, and plugs; homeowners wanting a dedicated wall-mounted control panel rather than phone-only control; and buyers prioritizing Matter, Thread, Zigbee, voice control, and simple setup over advanced automation logic.

Main strengths for the use case. The Echo Hub supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, Matter, and Sidewalk devices, and Amazon states it supports more than 140,000 compatible smart-home devices [121]. The 8-inch touchscreen provides a customizable dashboard for device controls, rooms, routines, security-system arming, and camera feeds [121]. Amazon documents local Matter connectivity and states that selected devices can remain controllable when internet access is unavailable [18]. Amazon says response time with locally connected devices can be as little as 300 milliseconds [313]. The device is purpose-built as a hub rather than a speaker with hub functionality added [225]. It provides deep Ring and Blink camera integration with live feeds on the display [280]. The hardware has a slim wall-mounted profile with a built-in infrared proximity sensor and no camera [257].

Main limitations. There is no Z-Wave radio, so Z-Wave locks, switches, and sensors require a separate hub [225]. Alexa voice processing runs in the cloud, and automation routines require an active internet connection [266]. One platform scored local control at 3.0 out of 10.0 due to cloud-heavy Alexa automation architecture, with most cross-device logic requiring AWS round-trips [330]. Ecosystem compatibility is limited to Alexa plus partial SmartThings reach, with no native Google Home or Apple HomeKit support [330]. Camera integration is limited to Ring and Blink; third-party cameras show limited status without native live view [227]. Amazon's Sidewalk mesh feature is enabled by default [227].

8. Google Home

Questions explored

  • Is Google Home worth it for whole-home automation, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if their home is built on Nest thermostats and Google speakers?
  • What does a Google Home hub cost, and which Nest devices act as Thread border routers?

Google Home is Google's smart home platform, with Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) acting as Matter hubs and Thread border routers. Google Home ranked eighth, named by four platforms with an average listed position of 6.75 and a best position of 6.

Why it ranked here. It was listed sixth by three platforms and ninth by one. Its ranking reflects mainstream Matter and Thread support and a polished app constrained by cloud-dependent automation and no native Zigbee or Z-Wave radios.

Best suited for. Households already using Android, Google Assistant or Gemini for Home, Nest thermostats, Google speakers, Google TV, or Nest cameras; buyers wanting Matter and Thread support without installing a separate dedicated automation server; and whole-home lighting, climate, presence, sensor, media, and convenience automations managed through a mainstream mobile app.

Main strengths for the use case. Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) can act as Thread border routers for Google Home, and Google states that a hub is required to add Matter devices to automations [96]. Google Home supports Google devices, Matter devices, and many third-party devices carrying the Works with Google Home designation [106]. The current Google Home automation editor supports starters, optional conditions, and actions, including device-state and presence conditions [101]. Google has introduced a redesigned Automations area with household automation editing, status management, upcoming scheduled automations, and activity history [103]. Google Home lists over 10,000 compatible devices [194]. The Nest Hub (2nd gen) is listed at $99.99 and contains radios supporting both Wi-Fi and Thread [81]. Google Home API grants third-party developers access for local control bypassing Google's cloud infrastructure [304]. Google has expanded automation capabilities to include advanced triggers, states, and conditions such as security arming status, appliance status, light brightness thresholds, and media playback states [286].

Main limitations. Google's documentation states that automations can depend on working internet, Wi-Fi, and Google or third-party service availability, and that automations may fail [103]. The sources checked do not establish that the full automation engine operates locally during internet outages [103]. Google devices lack native Zigbee and Z-Wave radios, forcing non-Matter device commands through the cloud [224].

What this study reveals

Questions explored

  • What do AI platforms agree on about whole-home automation hubs in 2026?
  • Which smart home automation hub features matter most across platforms for local processing and device compatibility?

Three patterns dominate this study. First, local processing is the primary dividing line. Home Assistant, Hubitat Elevation, and Homey Pro are consistently described as running core automation on-device, while Aeotec Smart Home Hub, Amazon Echo Hub, and Google Home are described as partially or substantially cloud-dependent [161]. Apple Home sits between these poles, with strong local execution but narrower device breadth [301].

Second, built-in radio coverage is a recurring tradeoff against openness. Home Assistant Green has no onboard radios and requires dongles [241]. Hubitat C-8 Pro and Homey Pro include multiple radios natively [330]. Aeotec includes Z-Wave on the older model but not the newer Hub 2 [311]. Amazon Echo Hub and Google Home hubs omit Z-Wave entirely [225].

Third, ecosystem lock-in varies widely. Home Assistant is Apache-2.0 open source with no vendor lock-in [153].

Where the AI Platforms Agreed

Questions explored

  • Which whole-home automation hub do all seven AI platforms recommend?
  • Which smart home automation platforms are consistently described as local-first across platforms?

Agreement was strongest on Home Assistant. All seven platforms named it, and every one listed it first [156]. Platforms consistently described it as the broadest and most open platform, with local-first operation and no mandatory subscription for core automation [287].

Platforms also agreed that Home Assistant Green lacks built-in Zigbee, Thread, and Z-Wave radios and requires separate adapters [241].

Hubitat Elevation was consistently described as local-first with built-in radios and a steeper learning curve [66]. Platforms agreed that its interface is functional but less polished than consumer alternatives [328].

Aeotec Smart Home Hub was consistently described as broad in protocol coverage but only partially local [186].

Where the AI Platforms Disagreed

Questions explored

  • Which whole-home automation hub has the most conflicting evidence across AI platforms?
  • Why do AI platforms disagree about local processing on the Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Google Home?

The largest disagreement concerns local processing on Aeotec Smart Home Hub. Aeotec marketing describes SmartThings Edge local execution, while independent testing found only about 40% of automations can run offline and that the app requires internet [184]. One platform rated the hub's local control at 5.0 out of 10.0 [330].

Google Home produced similar disagreement. Google states that Matter devices can be controlled locally and that hubs provide a local fulfillment path, but other sources state that Google Home does not yet support locally controlling devices over Thread and routes commands through the internet [25]. One platform reported 2–3 second delays from cloud processing [224].

Aqara produced the widest ranking spread of any top-five entity, from second to eighth place [235]. Platforms disagreed on whether the M3 fully controls non-Aqara Matter devices or only exposes Aqara devices outward [137].

Pricing conflicts appeared across nearly every entity.

How to compare your options

Questions explored

  • What should a buyer check before choosing a whole-home automation hub for lighting, thermostats, and sensors?
  • Which smart home automation hub should a buyer choose if they need automations to survive an internet outage and also want Z-Wave support?

Start with the devices already in the home. Protocol support is not the same as device support. Home Assistant publishes integrations for more than 1,000 device and brand domains, but compatibility remains integration- and device-specific [158]. Hubitat supports 1,000+ devices across 100+ brands, but exact models, drivers, and capabilities must be checked [207]. Aeotec's usable device list is defined by SmartThings certification plus community Edge drivers, not by Aeotec alone [170].

Then decide how much local operation matters. If automations must continue during internet outages, Home Assistant, Hubitat Elevation, and Homey Pro are the strongest fits in this study [161]. If a polished consumer app matters more than full local execution, Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Google Home are reasonable choices with documented cloud dependencies [186].

Then check radio requirements. Z-Wave is absent from Aqara, Amazon Echo Hub, and Google Home hubs [312].

Methodology

This index was produced from one standardized prompt sent once to each of seven included AI platforms: ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Kimi, and Gemini. The prompt described a homeowner who already has some smart devices and wants to build out a centralized automation system controlling lighting, thermostats, locks, and sensors from one hub, going well beyond basic intrusion alarms, with attention to device brand support, day-to-day reliability, and local versus cloud operation.

Platforms were asked which providers they would recommend and why. Entities named by at least two platforms qualified for the final ranking. Twelve unique entities were named; eight qualified. The final ranking order is determined by platform mentions, then average listed position, then best listed position, and is reproduced here without recalculation.

Entity evidence bundles supplied the buyer fit, features, pricing, strengths, limitations, disagreements, and citations for each qualifying entity. The ranking table is the sole authority for rank, platform mentions, platform share, average rank, and best rank. Platform mentions count only ranking-discovery mentions, not the number of platforms that later completed a fit assessment.

Citations are platform-reported evidence, not independently verified facts. Company-owned sources are distinguished from independent sources where the evidence bundles provide that information. The URLs were collected from platform responses and were not independently validated by the writer stage.

Research limitations

This study used one standardized prompt sent once to each included platform. AI answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved. A single run cannot capture that variance.

Platform-reported research dates differ from the authoritative run date of 2026-09-30. Those dates are provenance metadata and do not independently prove freshness. One platform reported a research date of 2026-02-14, another 2026-01-15, another 2026-06-01, another 2026-06-12, and another 2026-01-22.

Platform recommendations are market intelligence, not independent customer reviews or proof of quality. Several entities in this study rely heavily on company-owned sources. Google Home's evidence bundle, for example, contains materially more company-owned citations than independent ones, so company claims should not be described as independently verified.

Pricing conflicts were not resolved by guessing. Where sources disagreed, this article describes the conflict and tells buyers what to verify. Several platforms flagged pricing confidence as low or moderate.

No-search model claims require explicit verification before being described as current facts. Some platforms in this run operated without search enabled.

The deterministic identity audit contained qualification notes for some entities, including failed official-site retrieval and company-name variant collapsing. Those notes are disclosed where relevant.

The consensus assessment

Home Assistant is the consensus leader for whole-home automation hub selection in this 7-platform study, named by all seven platforms and listed first by every one. It is the strongest fit for buyers who prioritize device breadth, local-first operation, and ecosystem openness, and who accept dongle purchases, configuration work, and community-based support.

Hubitat Elevation is the strongest alternative for buyers who want local-first execution with built-in radios and no dongle shopping, at the cost of a dated interface and a steeper learning curve. Aeotec Smart Home Hub is the strongest alternative for mixed Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Matter homes that want a polished consumer app, provided buyers accept partial local operation and verify they are purchasing the Z-Wave-equipped model.

Aqara, Homey, Apple Home, Amazon Echo Hub, and Google Home each serve narrower buyer profiles defined by existing ecosystem investment, protocol requirements, or form factor preferences. None of them displaces the top three for the general case described in this study's prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which whole-home automation hub is best overall in this study? Home Assistant ranked first, named by all seven platforms with an average listed position of 1.0 and a best position of 1.

How many platforms were studied? Seven: ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Kimi, and Gemini.

How many entities qualified for the ranking? Eight entities qualified out of twelve unique names, using the rule that an entity must be named by at least two platforms.

Does Home Assistant Green include Zigbee and Thread radios? No. Home Assistant Green has no onboard Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth radios. Direct Zigbee or Thread control requires a Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 or similar adapter, and Z-Wave generally requires a separate USB stick.

Does the Aeotec Smart Home Hub support Z-Wave? The original Aeotec Smart Home Hub supports Z-Wave Plus, Zigbee, Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi. The newer Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 does not list Z-Wave, so buyers relying on Z-Wave devices must confirm the exact model.

Does the Amazon Echo Hub support Z-Wave? No. The Echo Hub has no Z-Wave radio, so Z-Wave locks, switches, and sensors require a separate hub.

Does Google Home support Zigbee or Z-Wave natively? No. Google Home hubs lack native Zigbee and Z-Wave radios, and non-Matter device commands route through the cloud.

Study limitations

  • Recommendation counts measure mentions during the ranking stage. Later fit assessments do not increase those counts.
  • Some evidence identifiers refer to individual platform responses rather than independently verified sources.
  • Source URLs came from AI platform responses and were not independently validated during report preparation.
